Day 63 – Mount Isa

Originally the plan today was to head down the road to Cloncurry, and also drop into Mary Kathleen on the way. But while the Macgyver fix on the sunroof is holding really well, as I mentioned yesterday, the windscreen crack is still getting bigger. So I wasn’t really keen on putting more stress on it by driving down the freeway… and also just keen to keep the drives as close to a home base as possible for now.

We dropped into Mount Isa Baptist Church this morning for their service. We’d intended to try and visit a few different churches along the way, but that hasn’t really eventuated for a bunch of reasons. So it was a great chance to visit a different church – and it was a really lovely morning. The kids had a great time and made a bunch of new friends – as they always seem to do when we visit places where other kids are.

On the way home, we thought we’d check out the local community markets for a bit of a wander through, and there was some interesting crafts and other things there. And then we grabbed some hot chocolates and donuts for morning tea – which was probably the highlight of the day for the kids, I reckon!

This afternoon has been a bit more chilled back at the caravan park. It’s felt a bit strange given how planned everything has been for the last 62 days – but it really has been nice to pause, and it’s brought out the creativity in the kids. After a bit of chicken & chips for lunch, they’ve made a putt putt course, had a swim, and are now playing in the little playground across from our cabin – and, of course, making more friends with others in the caravan park. While they were in the pool, I even pulled out one of my little synths that I’d brought on the road with me – there really hasn’t been a chance to pause for moments like that, so I really enjoyed it. Debbie took the time to just rest a bit too.

And, really, that’s all there is to today! Tomorrow will be interesting, with a lot of ducks to line up: windscreen repair, hopefully some sealing wrap for the temporary sunroof patching, and getting Volkswagen to come to the party to fix the sunroof on hopefully a specific day! Let’s see how that goes.

We’re meant to be in Hughenden tomorrow night – but the chances of getting the windscreen replaced tomorrow are extremely low. So I think we’ll be in Mount Isa for at least another night or two. There will be a few things we will miss – but if we can still make it to Undara by Thursday morning, then I’ll be stoked.
