Back on the mainland today, and we’ve arrived in Glenelg – our favourite part of Adelaide to stay in. This land we’re sleeping on tonight, the lands throughout what we now know as Adelaide, and as far north as Port Wakefield, is the land of the Kaurna people. We acknowledge their elders past, present and emerging.
We headed out from Kingscote back across to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island this morning – we had a 10:30 ferry to catch! Thankfully, it wasn’t quite as windy and rocky as the trip over, but still certainly not calm. We jumped off the ferry soon after and started to head back up the Fleurieu Peninsula towards Adelaide. In reality, it was a very short drive into Adelaide – we theoretically could’ve come all the way here for lunch!
We stopped off for a quick look at the HMAS Hobart lookout, which was interesting and some great views – but not a heap else. But just up the road was the town of Normanville, and that looked like a good place for lunch. As we arrived, I spotted a beautiful park overlooking the river, and a really nice picnic shelter with a BBQ. So I thought it was probably time to exchange our roadside holiday sandwiches for roadside holiday sausage sizzle!
I ducked into the local supermarket and found some sausages (sadly, the local butcher was closed, being Sunday), and we set ourselves up and started cooking. The kids enjoyed having a run around while they waited too. But it was a perfect lunch, and one we probably should do more often to break apart the peanut butter sandwiches!
As we drove on toward Adelaide, I was keen to drop into somewhere in McLaren Vale – because, really, if you’re driving past McLaren Vale and you love wine, you do need to stop in somewhere, don’t you? I dropped into Bec Hardy Wines – mostly because she has just come onboard with Naked Wines, and I thought it was a great chance to taste some of her wines! I expected it to be quite busy, being a Sunday afternoon – but it was very empty, and I was the only person there! But they were super accomodating and made me feel very welcome. It was a fun little time to taste some really delicious wines, with a really lovely view.
While I was enjoying all that, the kids and Debbie headed just back down the road to the Willunga Jubilee Rose Garden – they burnt some energy on the play equipment there, and also enjoyed running through a rose maze.
We’re staying at a really nice place in Glenelg North. We love it in this part of Adelaide – although we’re not quite in walking distance down to the water, it’s still a really lovely area to be in. And there’s an easy tram from here into the city, which we hope we’ll make use of later in the week!
